Size

The size of the pearl depends on the size and health of molluscs in which they grow, the size of the core causes it to grow, and the length of time the pearl is left to grow in molluscs, as well as several other factors. Luster is caused by light traveling down through translucent nacre, and reflect back to the eye. There seems to light the inside of the pearl nucleus.

There are four categories of sheen:

* Superior - Reflections on a bright, sharp, and distinct.

* Good - Reflections on the bright but not sharp, and they may be a bit blurred at the edges.

* Fair - Reflections weak, vague, and vague

* Poor - a dim reflection and disseminated.

Akoya pearls tend to display bright, mirror like gloss, while others feature luster, soft satiny, which has its own charm.

Tahitian pearls have almost metallic sheen, while Southsea pearls have more of a soft satiny luster.
